Hayes Theater

Closes Sunday 29th May

Richard Greenberg’s Tony Award winning play about a sports star’s coming out returns to New York, starring Jesse Williams.

Grey’s Anatomy alumnus Jesse Williams stars in a revival of Richard Greenberg’s Tony Award winning play Take Me Out. Set in the high-stakes world of professional baseball, this smart and snappy play about bigotry in sport runs at the Hayes Theater.

Center fielder Darren Lemming is a star of the Empires baseball team, earning respect and plaudits across the board. But when he comes out as gay, deeply held prejudices and the ugly barriers facing LGBT men of color begin to rear their heads. With both teammates and fans becoming hostile, the championship season of this very masculine sport is put under the spotlight as those on and off the field begin to re-examine tradition, allegiance and what really counts as a win.

Jesse Williams makes his Broadway debut as Darren. He is best known as Dr. Jackson Avery in ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, with other projects spanning documentaries, mobile apps and the “Question Bridge: Black Males” art installation at the Smithsonian National Museum.

ABC’s Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson plays opposite Williams, having previously appeared on stage in On The Town, Spamalot and The Producers.

Take Me Out on Broadway is directed by Scott Ellis, a nine-time Tony Award nominee whose previous work include Tootside and The Elephant Man. Other creatives are yet to be confirmed.

Featuring a Broadway bow from Jesse Williams and a compellingly relevant story, Take Me Out at the Hayes Theater is an exciting revival of a modern classic.

I know nothing about baseball, but I still thought this was a really enjoyable show - good mix of drama and comedy and genuinely interesting.
