About The Wiz

When a tornado whisks Dorothy and her little dog Toto to a magical land filled with witches, munchkins and other wild and wonderful sights, she soon finds herself heading for the Emerald City itself. Can she defeat the Wicked Witch of the West and uncover the secrets of Oz?

Based on Frank L. Baum’s children’s story, The Wiz was a Broadway sensation when it premiered back in 1975. Running for four years and with seven Tony Awards under its belt, it transforms the classic tale into a celebration of Black culture infused with jazz, blues, soul and pop-inspired songs including “Home,” “Ease On Down the Road,” and “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News”.

Cast and Creative Team

A hot cast of musical theater performers bring The Wiz back to New York after a US tour, including Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy, Wayne Brady as The Wiz, Deborah Cox as Glinda, Melody A. Betts as Aunt Em/Evillene, and an unforgettable trio as the Lion, Tinman and Scarecrow: Kyle Ramar Freeman, Phillip Johnson Richardson and Avery Wilson.

The show has a book by William F. Brown and music & lyrics by Charlie Smalls. Schele Williams directs this brand-new revival, which has sharp-footed choreography by Jaquel Knight (the mind beyond Beyoncé’s Single Ladies dance) and new material from Amber Ruffin that ensures the Wiz, Dorothy and all her friends are ready for their 21st-century comeback!
