Question 1

What shows are on Broadway right now?

Accepted Answer

Current shows include long-running, wildly popular hit musicals such as Disney's The Lion King, the outrageously funny (and adult) The Book of Mormon and the longest-running musical still playing in NYC, Chicago.

More recent blockbusters include the record-breaking megahit Hamilton and, for families, tickets for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are a popular choice.

For a taste of the latest shows in town, why not book to see the blockbuster North American premiere of Stranger Things: The First Shadow before it closes at the end of the year? Other top shows include The Rocky Horror Show, the hilarious Schmigadoon, and The Outsiders - the most successful new Broadway musical in years.

Question 2

Are there any Broadway shows for children?

Accepted Answer

Several shows are perfect for children, including top musicals like Aladdin. Check our Broadway shows for kids page for the best family-friendly theater in New York.

If you are taking teenagers to the theater, tickets for & Juliet on Broadway and SIX the Musical are popular choices. They have more complex themes and are presented in a fun, accessible format with pop-inspired music.

Many Broadway shows allow entry for children aged 4+ if they are accompanied by an adult. However, the content may not be aimed at children so it is best to check the age guidance before you book.

Question 3

How long are Broadway shows?

Accepted Answer

Most performances range between 90 minutes to three hours in length. This varies depending on the production, but musicals are typically 2.5 hours long. Plays tend to have greater variety in running times, usually ranging from 90 minutes to 2 hours but can range from 1 hour to 3 hours.

Always check the runtime of a production before booking tickets if you need to plan timings.

Question 4

What days are Broadway shows on?

Accepted Answer

Most Broadway performances are on Tuesdays - Sundays, with Monday traditionally being the day theaters are dark. Some shows may have performances on Mondays or add extra midweek matinees, especially during school holidays.

If you want to book Broadway matinee tickets, afternoon performances are usually on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Question 5

What time do Broadway shows start?

Accepted Answer

Depending on the day of the week, evening performances usually start at 7.00pm, 7.30pm or 8.00pm. Most Broadway shows start at 7.00pm for early weekday performances, such as Monday & Tuesday and may start later on Friday and Saturday. Some Sunday evening performances will start at 6.30pm.

Matinee performances typically start at 1.00pm or 2.00pm.

Start times can vary depending on the show so always pay particular attention to timings when you book.

Question 6

Do Broadway shows include intermissions?

Accepted Answer

Shows that run for longer than 90 minutes will typically include an intermission for audience comfort. Some particularly long shows may even include two intermissions, but this is quite rare.

Question 7

What do people wear to Broadway shows?

Accepted Answer

Broadway theaters do not have a dress code. It is always best to wear something comfortable and suitable for the season. Many people choose to wear smarter clothes for theater outings, particularly for special occasions, but this is not mandatory.

Question 8

What and where is Broadway?

Accepted Answer

Broadway is New York's famous Theater District that stages some of the biggest commercial plays and musicals in the world. It is located in Midtown Manhattan and close to Times Square. Most Broadway theaters are between 41st and 52nd Streets but can stretch as far as the Lincoln Center, home to the Vivian Beaumont Theater, on 65th Street.

To qualify as Broadway, venues must have at least 500 seats. The smallest Broadway theater is the Hayes Theater with a capacity of 597 seats and the largest is the Gershwin Theatre with 1,933 seats.

Question 9

What and where is Off-Broadway?

Accepted Answer

Off-Broadway is the name given to New York theaters with between 100 and 499 seats. These are often located outside the main Broadway area, although most are still in Manhattan. Off-Broadway shows are typically smaller and less expensive to both stage and buy tickets for than Broadway, and there is a long tradition of Off-Broadway hits transferring onto Broadway.

Some of the most well-known Off-Broadway theaters include Astor Place Theatre, Daryl Roth Theatre and Laura Pels Theatre.
