What and where is Broadway?

Broadway is New York's famous Theater District that stages some of the biggest commercial plays and musicals in the world. It is located in Midtown Manhattan and close to Times Square. Most Broadway theaters are between 41st and 52nd Streets but can stretch as far as the Lincoln Center, home to the Vivian Beaumont Theater, on 65th Street.

To qualify as Broadway, venues must have at least 500 seats. The smallest Broadway theater is the Hayes Theater with a capacity of 597 seats and the largest is the Gershwin Theatre with 1,933 seats.

What and where is Off-Broadway?

Off-Broadway is the name given to New York theaters with between 100 and 499 seats. These are often located outside the main Broadway area, although most are still in Manhattan. Off-Broadway shows are typically smaller and less expensive to both stage and buy tickets for than Broadway, and there is a long tradition of Off-Broadway hits transferring onto Broadway.
