Olivier Award-winning playwright Jack Thorne adapts Charles Dickens’ classic festive story A Christmas Carol for the stage, starring Welsh actor Rhys Ifans as Ebenezer Scrooge. Directed by Artistic Director Matthew Warchus, the uplifting production plays a limited season at The Old Vic, following Bob Dylan musical Girl From the North Country.

Arguably Dickens’ best-known tale, A Christmas Carol follows the miserly Scrooge on a cold Christmas Eve. Throughout the night, he is visited by four mysterious ghosts, who take him on a dangerous journey through his own past, present and future. Confronted by his worst fears, Scrooge must decide whether he can continue to live such a selfish, lonely life. Can he save himself before Christmas morning?

After most recently appearing on stage alongside Glenda Jackson in King Lear, BAFTA Award-winning actor Rhys Ifans stars as Scrooge. Well-known for his extensive screen work, notable credits include Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Alice Through the Looking Glass and Notting Hill. Theatre credits include Don Juan in Soho at the Donmar Warehouse and Beautiful Thing at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

Casting also includes John Dagleish, who received an Olivier Award for his performance in Sunny Afternoon as Bob Cratchit and Maria Omakinwa as Mrs Cratchit. Additional casting features Melissa Allan as Little Fan, Jamie Cameron as Young Ebenezer/George, Erin Doherty as Belle, Tim van Eyken as Nicholas, Alex Gaumond as Father/Marley, Siena Kelly as Jess, Eugene McCoy as Fred, Myra McFadyen as Ghost of Christmas Past, Alastair Parker as Fezziwig and Golda Rosheuvel as Ghost of Christmas Present/Mrs Fezzwig, as well as Oliver Evans as Ensemble.

Matthew Warchus directs, with award-winning productions to his name including Matilda the Musical and Groundhog Day the Musical. Adapted by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Junkyard), who most recently adapted Woyzeck for The Old Vic stage, A Christmas Carol features design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Simon Baker and compositions by Chris Nightingale.

Running for strictly limited seasonal performances, A Christmas Carol is the magical story of a cold-hearted man who learns to love Christmas, in a production packed with plenty of festive cheer.
