Antony and Cleopatra Tickets

Barbican Theatre

Shakespeare’s brutal love story Anthony and Cleopatra comes to the Barbican this November, as part of the RSC breath-taking Rome season. This stunning tale of pride, love and duty is given new life by an acclaimed creative team, with direction by Iqbal Khan and starring the Olivier Award-nominated, Josette Simon, alongside Antony Byrne.

Anthony and Cleopatra, one of Shakespeare’s greatest love stories, takes pride of place in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s thrilling Rome Season at the Barbican this winter. Directed by Iqbal Khan, who is known for his urgent and exhilarating interpretations of The Bard, the production plays a limited run in the Barbican main space from November.

Following Caesar’s brutal assassination, Antony and Cleopatra charts the story of Mark Antony as he ascends to height of Roman power. Now his life of self-indulgence and seduction by his mistress Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, leads him to carelessly neglect his empire. Divided between duty and love, his military prowess leaves him, and his passion leads the lovers to their tragic end.

Director, Iqbal Khan, is a Shakespeare veteran, having most recently directed his critically acclaimed adaptation of Othello before going on to stage Macbeth at the Globe in 2016. The Olivier Award-nominated Josette Simon takes on the role of Cleopatra alongside Antony Byrne’s Mark Antony.

Singer-songwriter Laura Mvula writes the sublime score for the production with sound by Carolyn Downing. The grand ancient aesthetic of the piece is designed by Robert Innes Hopkins with lighting by Tim Mitchell. Movement and fight choreographed by Villmore James and Kevin McCurdy.

Anthony and Cleopatra is part of the RSC’s exciting Rome MMXVII season transferring to the Barbican this year, with season director Angus Jackson taking the helm on Coriolanus and Julius Caesar, whilst Blanche McIntyre directs the compelling Titus Andronicus. The plays expose the decadence, politics, power play and corruption of Ancient Rome, charting the decline of an empire from birth to eventual disintegration.

Dive into the ancient world of kings, queens, love and honour this winter with Anthony and Cleopatra, playing at Barbican from the 30th November 2017 to 20th January 2018.
