Garrick Theatre

Budding starlet Roxie Hart attempts to get away with murder in Kander and Ebb’s hugely famous musical Chicago. Catapulting to fame after the release of the 2002 film of the same name, the musical has continued to enjoy a critically acclaimed West End run at London’s Garrick Theatre.

Chicago is one of the West End’s longest running and most loved musicals. Growing in popularity following the release of the 2002 film of the same name, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger, Chicago is the sultry, sexy musical that is based on real life events. Premiering on Broadway in 1975 to rave reviews, the musical opened on the West End in 1979 and was revived in 1997 at London’s Garrick Theatre.

Chicago follows Roxie Hart, a young woman who murders her lover after she discovers that he is using her. After trying to convince her husband to take the blame, she is sent to Cook County Jail, where she meets Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian actress who killed her husband and sister after discovering their affair. On arrival, Roxie threatens to steal the limelight and media attention from Velma, who is plotting her showbiz comeback. Together, the pair realise that they can only count on themselves and maybe their shared lawyer, the charming Billy Flynn.

Written in the 1970’s with a book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb, Chicago has a sumptuous score written by the famous duo Kander and Ebb. The revival of Chicago has been entertaining audiences on the West End since 1997, directed by Walter Bobbie with design by Jo by John Lee Beatty and choreography by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse’s original.

Well-known musical numbers in Chicago include the show-stopping ‘All that Jazz’, ‘Cell Block Tango’, ‘Funny Honey’, ‘Razzle Dazzle’, and ‘Mr Cellophane’. Bobbie’s 1997 revival received unprecedented success, earning a collective nine Tony and Olivier Awards.
