Kenneth Branagh is joined by Zoë Wanamaker in a revival of Terence Rattigan’s rarely performed Harlequinade. The comedy centres on a rep company attempting to put on disastrous productions of Romeo and Juliet and The Winter’s Tale where on stage and off stage worlds begin to collide. Wanamaker will also perform Rattigan’s powerfully atmospheric one woman play All on Her Own before each performance.

Kenneth Branagh is joined by esteemed actress Zoë Wanamaker in a revival of Terence Rattigan’s rarely performed comedy Harlequinade.

In a never before seen double bill Wanamaker will also perform Rattigan’s powerfully atmospheric one woman show All On Her Own prior to each performance. This monologue is much darker and provides a real contrast to Harlequinade; the pairing really shows off the range of one of one of Britain’s finest playwrights.

The contrasting performances will also show off the versatility of double Olivier Award winning actress Zoe Wanamaker. Star of My Family and Harry Potter, Wanamaker has also had a prolific stage career regularly performing with the RSC or at the National Theatre. The show will also star John Dalgleish who has been seen recently giving an Olivier Award winning performance as Ray Davies in hit Hampstead theatre Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon.

Rattigan’s work has enjoyed a bit of a Renaissance in recent years with a number of high profile productions being mounted to celebrate his centenary back in 2011 including Flare Path starring Sienna Miller, Chichester’s revival of The Browning Version for which they commissioned David Hare to right a companion piece, South Downs and Cause Célèbre starring Anne-Marie Duff at The Old Vic.

Harlequinade tells the story of a classical theatre company attempting to put on productions of The Winter’s Tale and Romeo and Juliet. Focusing on what goes on behind the scenes we see the disaster unfold as the off stage world of the actors and onstage world of the characters collide with hilarious consequences.

This production will be the second of the newly formed Branagh company, who are taking up a residency at the Garrick theatre for a season of five plays. The show will fittingly play in rep with Branagh’s production of The Winter’s Tale starring Judi Dench. Romeo and Juliet also features later in the season, for which Branagh has reunited the cast of his recent Disney live action Cinderella blockbuster Richard Madden, Lily James and Derek Jacobi.

This production will be co directed by Kenneth Branagh and Rob Ashford.

Sorry this show closed 13 January 2016, we recommend these similar productions.

    Audience Notes:
Fans of Rattigan’s work will appreciate the rare opportunity to catch one of his little performed works in what is sure to be a fine double bill. Those who enjoyed Noises Off will appreciate the on stage/off stage antics of this comedy which celebrates the lunacy of putting on a play.
