Shakespeare's tragedy reigns over London

Ian McKellen stars as King Lear in Chichester Festival Theatre’s celebrated production of Shakespeare’s play, transferring to the West End. The exciting new staging opens for a strictly limited 100 performances at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

King Lear is an epic tragedy that sees two fathers cast out their dearest children in favour of greed and ambition. As treachery grows within families, a violent power struggle ensues with fatal consequences.

Director Jonathan Munby’s acclaimed production first opened at Chichester Festival Theatre, setting the action in a contemporary Britain which thrillingly resonates with the original text’s politics. 

Ian McKellen, one of Britain’s foremost actors, takes on the title role, having starred in iconic work on stage and screen since his career began in the 1960s. His credits include Lord of the Rings, Waiting for Godot and Richard III. 

Taking place in a crumbling present-day Britain, McKellen and Munby’s King Lear sold out and earned five-star reviews across the board in Chichester. Audiences of all kinds will want to get their hands on King Lear tickets as it hits the West End.
