An all-male Original Practices production, Richard III is presented in traditional Elizabethan style, with costume, music and dance inspired by the original 1593 setting. Transferring to the Apollo Theatre following a successful run at Shakespeare’s Globe, Richard III promises to be a theatrical highlight.

    BAFTA, Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor Mark Rylance stars as Shakespeare’s most malicious villain Richard III in an entirely traditional revamp of the classic play. Directed by Tim Carroll, Richard III is the electrifying transfer of the smash-hit Shakespeare’s Globe production, opening at the West End’s Apollo Theatre for a limited season. Playing in rep with Twelfth Night, Richard III is an all-male Original Practices production, bringing back traditional 1593 casting, clothing, music and dance.

    One of Shakespeare’s best-known plays, Richard III follows Richard Duke of Gloucester who is determined to wear the crown of England. After already despatching the current King and his son, all that stands in his way are two imprudent brothers and two innocent nephews who are holed up in the Tower. Woe betide anyone who dares to oppose him, as Richard III is the most conniving monarch of them all.

    Multi-award winning actor Mark Rylance stars as the scheming King, following a highly acclaimed performance as Johnny “Rooster” Byron in Jerusalem. Further cast members include Samuel Barnett (Desperate Romantics) as Queen Elizabeth, Johnny Flynn as Lady Anne/Grey, Roger Lloyd Pack (Only Fools and Horses) as the Duke of Buckingham, James Garnon as the Duchess of York/Richmond, Colin Hurley as King Edward/Stanley, Liam Brennan as Clarence/Lord Mayor and Paul Chahidi as Hastings/Tyrell, as well as Lorenzo Allchurch, Dylan Standen, Shanu Hazzan, Austin Moulton, Peter Hamilton Dyer, Ian Drysdale, Ben Thompson, John Paul Connolly and Jethro Skinner.

    Directed by Tim Carroll, Richard III features design by Jenny Tirimani, with original music by Claire van Kampen. Conjuring up an authentic Elizabethan atmosphere, Carroll’s acclaimed production features an all-male cast to tell the tale of the Machiavellian King who insisted on ruling with a homicidal and absolute power. Opening at London’s Apollo Theatre, Richard III plays for a limited season only.
