Sally Cookson brings a colourful adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Stick Man to the London stage, playing a festive season at the Leicester Square Theatre. Based on the much-loved, well-known story, the tale sees Stick Man leave his family tree to go on a morning run. All is well until a dog decides he looks perfect for a game of fetch!

Scamp Theatre adapts Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved 2008 story Stick Man for the stage, playing a limited festive season at London’s Leicester Square Theatre. Best known for their 1999 children’s book The Gruffalo, the writing duo’s shows have also been adapted for the stage by theatre company Tall Stories.

Stick Man has evolved into a 55-minute children’s show that has proved so popular that it’s returned to the stage for several consecutive years. It follows the story of Stick Man, as he leaves his family tree to go for his morning run. Unfortunately, an enthusiastic dog decides he’d be put to much better use in a game of fetch!

So embarks an Odyssey-like quest to get home to his family that sees him drift down a river, be used as a flagpole, a bat and maybe even firewood. Fortunately, the beloved Father Christmas saves the day and Stick Man’s story ends happily ever after.

Stick Man is directed by Sally Cookson, a veteran of Bristol Old Vic, the National Theatre and the West End. Though she regularly directs work for children and young people, her recent touring production of Jane Eyre garnered critical acclaim. Other directing credits include Hetty Feather, Bearhunt and Pericles. Lara Cowin, Sam Heron and Alex Tosh are the cast of three that bring Stick Man to life this holiday season.

The brightly coloured adventure story for young children and their families is just the right length of time to introduce little ones to theatre without losing their attention. The familiar story and whimsical design will delight audiences of all ages and is sure to be one of the West End’s more popular family shows this holiday season. Stick Man runs from 30 November 2017 to 7 January 2018 at the Leicester Square Theatre.
