Overview

Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical waltzes into the Piccadilly Theatre for a West End run, following a hugely successful revival at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2016. Originally premiering in 2014 at Australia’s Sydney Lyric Theatre, the vibrant production is an uplifting celebration that inspired the world to dance! Now the production returns, featuring a star-studded cast including Will Young and Zizi Strallen.

Based on Luhrmann’s 1992 film of the same name, starring Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice, the story is adapted from a short play Luhrmann wrote in the 1980’s. Strictly Ballroom follows competitive ballroom dancer Scott, who is hell-bent on bending the rules to create his own moves, much to the ballroom-purists’ chagrin. But when he teams up with left-footed partner Fran, Scott defies the rules to follow his heart and win the Pan Pacifics his own way.

Featuring a book by Luhrmann and Craig Pierce, the musical features global star's smash-hit songs from the original film including “Love is in the Air”, “Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps”, “Time After Time” and “Standing in the Rain”.

Olivier Award-winning choreographer Drew McOnie directs the production, with previous credits including In the Heights, Jesus Christ Superstar and On the Town. McOnie is also directing the upcoming Broadway musical King Kong. Strictly Ballroom also includes set design by Soutra Gilmour, costume design by Catherine Martin, lighting design by Howard Hudson and sound design by Gareth Owen, with musical supervision by David Caddick and orchestrations by Simon Hale.

A stellar cast leads the production, including well-known singer Will Young (Cabaret, Mrs Henderson Presents) as Wally Strand, Jonny Labey (EastEnders) as Scott Hastings and Zizi Strallen (Follies, Cats) as Fran. Casting also includes Michelle Bishop as Pam Short, Ivan De Freitas as Merv, Gabriela Garcia as Vanessa Cronin, Charlotte Gooch as Tina Sparkle, Richard Grieve as Les Kendall, Liam Marcellino as Wayne Burns, Stephen Matthews as Doug Hastings, Fernando Mira as Rico, Eve Polycarpou as Abuela, Lauren Stroud as Liz Holt and Gary Watson as Ken Railings, as well as Anna Francolini as Shirley Hastings and Gerard Horan as Barry Fife.

Additional casting includes Chris Bennett, Chrissy Brooke, Hannah Fairclough, Selina Hamilton, Christopher D Hunt, Luke Jackson, Justin-Lee Jones, Robin Kent, Jacob Maynard, Leanne Pinder, Tinovimbanashe Sibanda and Dale White.

Strictly Ballroom is considered as part of Luhrmann’s “Red Curtain Trilogy”, which also includes smash-hit films Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge. Best known for his unique films, further credits include The Great Gatsby, whilst Moulin Rouge is undergoing workshops to adapt it into a stage musical. A heart-warming, romantic tale of the power of dance, Strictly Ballroom the Musical plays at the Piccadilly Theatre.

Matt Cardle (Memphis) takes over the role of Wally Strand from 31 July.

Without a doubt the feel good show of the year being a cross between Kinky Boots/Priscilla/Mama Mia. Frankly, heretofore not a big Will Young follower but he totally nails the show as the narrator/singer and maintains a 'cracker' Ox accent throughout. Entire cast are brilliant as are the minimal sets and excellent Ochestra/band so kudos all round guys and girls. Lovers of the original film will not be disappointed albeit certain libertys have obviously been taken with the original storyline. But for a great feel good night Strictly is hard to beat!

Let's be honest, the book of the show is pretty naff and predictable, but this show is SO much fun! Will Young's understudy was on, and he was fab - it's hard to imagine Will Young having the charisma to do that part. Johnny Labey was super slick as Scott, and it's a complete privilege to see Zizi Strallen perform - she's completely wonderful. It's genuine laugh-out-loud humour paired with Drew McOnie's fab choreography. You may not feel educated and it's certainly not revolutionary theatre, but it is a fantastic night out.

Really feel-good musical with very good songs. Went primarily to see Will Young who didn't perform. The understudy was good, but it wasn't Will. Apart from that the other cast were superb and came out happy and singing.

The show was amazing. It is so much fun. It is a great homage to the film and it really does it justice.

Absolutely brilliant. Having seen the film, the show really played on the characters. It is such a feel-good, sing and clap along show. The whole cast are great and they really looked like they were enjoying themselves. The costumes were vibrant. The band was excellent. Will Young wasn't on but the chap in his place was great and because he wasn't the main character, it didn't make any difference to the show. Loved it and plan to go again to see it.

This show is great. I loved the Aussie accents. It was a really cheesy show which made me giggle all the way through and I recognised lots of classic songs. A really fun night out. If I was being fussy I would say that there were too many people on stage a lot of the time which was unnecessary . The band were on stage as were the ensemble sometimes just standing around. I found this a bit much but it wouldn't stop me from seeing the show again.
