Summer and Smoke Tickets
Rebecca Frecknall directs a searing version of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke at the Almeida Theatre, starring Patsy Ferran and Matthew Needham. Following the unmarried daughter of a minister, the production is a stark insight into friendship, relationships and love.
Although Williams first started writing Summer and Smoke in 1945, the play did not receive a London premiere until 2006. The story centres on the unmarried daughter of a minister, Alma Winemiller, and her friendship with the young, uninhibited doctor next door, John.
Alma is a reserved young woman with an emotional life that she suppresses, whereas John seeks physical, instant gratification. The connection between them irrevocably changes them both. A searing insight into friendship, relationships and love, Summer and Smoke has earned acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
Patsy Ferran, who is regarded as one of the country’s best young actors, plays Alma. She was most recently praised for her work in the Royal Court’s production of My Mum’s a Twat and Speech and Debate at Trafalgar Studios. Matthew Needham plays John, whose credits include roles at the RSC, Shakespeare’s Globe and the National.
Rebecca Frecknall directs, with credits spanning the Northern Stage, Royal & Derngate and Soho Theatre. Further creative team includes designer Tom Scutt, lighting designer Lee Curran, sound designer Carolyn Downing and composer Angus MacRae.
A searing production that is rarely produced, Summer and Smoke plays at London’s Almeida for a strictly limited season. The production runs from 24 February to 7 April 2018, with a press night on 7 March 2018.
