Eve Best makes a triumphant return to the London stage to star in Jamie Lloyd’s bloody revival of The Duchess of Malfi. Written by John Webster, The Duchess of Malfi is said to be one of the greatest Jacobean tragedies of all time, following the Duchess as she is subjected to emotional and physical torture from her brothers. Bringing to light the ferocity of female courage in the face of male corruption, The Duchess of Malfi promises to be one of the highlights of the year.

Eve Best returns to London’s Old Vic Theatre to star in the legendary title role of John Webster’s Jacobean tragedy The Duchess of Malfi. In a major new production directed by Jamie Lloyd (Inadmissible Evidence), The Duchess of Malfi is Webster’s poetic masterpiece that documents the dark and bloody story of the recently widowed Duchess. Opening for a limited season at the Old Vic, performances begin in March 2012.

Set in the Italian Renaissance court of Amalfi, The Duchess of Malfi is the well-known story of the Duchess who secretly marries her lover and steward against the forbidden wishes of her powerful and vicious brothers. When jealously, torment and bloodshed surround her, the Duchess is forced to retain strength and dignity, even when faced with death. First performed in London between 1612 and 1614, The Duchess of Malfi is an apt exploration of female courage in the face of male corruption.

Olivier Award-winning actress Eve Best stars in the acclaimed role after most recently appearing at the Old Vic opposite Kevin Spacey in A Moon For the Misbegotten, for which she received the Drama Desk Award for Best Actress. Further credits include Much Ado About Nothing, The Homecoming and The King’s Speech. Additional casting includes Tom Bateman (The Lion in Winter), Mark Bonnar, Harry Lloyd and Finbar Lynch.

Directed by Lloyd, The Duchess of Malfi features design by Soutra Gilmour and lighting design by James Farncombe, with original music and sound design by Ben and Max Ringham. Considered to be one of the Jacobean era’s greatest tragedies, The Duchess of Malfi earned Webster a reputation as one of England’s greatest playwrights. Opening at the Old Vic Theatre for a limited season beginning in March 2012, this bloody, corrupt and nightmarishly violent production is set to a highlight of the year.
