About the show

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s famous picture book comes to life on stage in a captivating musical adaptation by Tall Stories. Having played to sell-out audiences across the world, The Gruffalo returns to London's Lyric Theatre for another summer season. It offers a fun and fitting introduction to the theatre for even the littlest of Gruffalo fans.

Come along as Mouse sets off on a daring journey into the dark woods in search of food. It's not long before Mouse bumps into Owl, Fox and Snake. These slippery predators have rumbling tummies, and Mouse must devise a cunning plan in order to avoid becoming dinner. She distracts them with the terrifying story of the Gruffalo, a formidable creature who is half grizzly bear and half buffalo. But is this mythical beast really just a product of Mouse's imagination?

This popular show was based on former children's Laureate Julia Donaldson’s book of the same name which is just one in a collection of well-loved stories, including 'The Gruffalo's Child', ‘Room on a Broom’, ‘The Snail and the Whale’ and ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’. Inspiration for the set of The Gruffalo is taken from Axel Scheffler’s iconic illustrations that feature in the original picture book.

Since its 2001 premiere, The Gruffalo has toured worldwide, with lauded runs in London, Asia and Australia's Sydney Opera House as well as Broadway. With a smooth 55 minute running time, and spilling over with comedy, interactions, music and physical theatre, The Gruffalo is designed especially for mini attention spans in mind.

Tall Stories is a pioneering company creating inspiring children’s theatre. Direction for this show comes from co-Artistic Director Olivia Jacobs.

A perfect example of storytelling for youngsters with just the right level of scariness, The Gruffalo shouldn't be missed. It runs at Lyric Theatre on 3 July 2019 until 8 September 2019.
