Based on the acclaimed best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner came to the West End stage, with performances having began at Wyndham’s Theatre on 21st December 2016 and running through to 11th March 2017.
The Kite Runner is the powerful and haunting tale of friendship which crosses the boundaries of both cultures and countries. This stunning new stage play based on Khaled Hosseini’s acclaimed original novel began performances at Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End on 21st December 2016.
The Kite Runner tells the tale of one’s man journey to face up to his past and find redemption, in a touching and powerful story of friendship, overshadowed by a web of guilt and betrayal.
Set in Afghanistan at a time where the country is divided and on the brink of war, The Kite Runner focuses on two childhood friends who are ripped apart. On a delightful day in Kabul, where the air is full of excitement and happiness during a kite flying tournament, neither Hassan or Amir can predict the horrible series of events that will destroy their lives forever.
The production had already mesmerised and delighted audiences across the country receiving high critical acclaim, before coming to London for a strictly limited run at Wyndham’s Theatre.
The production was adapted by American playwright Matthew Spangler, whose previous productions Albatross and Tortilla Curtain received great critical praise, including winning three Elliot Norton Awards.
The Kite Runner is based on the original book written by Khaled Hosseini, an award winning writer born in Kabul in Afghanistan. The book was first released in 2003, where in the first two years it sold over a million copies, steadily increasing in popularity and becoming a New York Times best seller in March 2005 and maintaining its place on the list for over two years.
Four years after its original publication, The Kite Runner was adapted into a film starring Khalid Abdalla, Homayoun Ershadi and Ahmad Khan Mamoodzada. The movie was directed by Marc Forster and won a range of awards, as well as being nominated for Academy and BAFTA awards.
British-Iranian actor Ben Turner returned to star in the play. Turner is best known for his work on both stage and screen, including his long running role in the BBC TV series Casualty as well as film work such as 300: Rise of an Empire and Adulthood.
Joining Turner is Emilio Doorgasingh as Baba, Nicholas Khan as Rahim Khan, Lisa Zahra as Soraya, David Ahmad as Kamal, Ezra Khan as Ali, Nicholas Karimi as Assef and Antony Bunsee as General Taheri.
