Sean O’Casey’s greatest play, The Plough and the Stars was brought back to the London stage in an epic production at the National Theatre to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising, co-directed by Howard Davies and Jeremy Herrin. The play opened on on 20th July 2016 and ran until 27th August 2016.
In the summer of 2016, to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Easter Rising, Sean O’Casey’s most acclaimed play The Plough and the Stars returned to the London stage in a new production at the National Theatre, co-directed by Jeremy Herrin and Howard Davies.
Between November 1915 and Easter 1916, while the uprising grows to a peak a short distance away, the divided residents of a tenement in Dublin continue on with their lives, on the outskirts of Ireland’s history.
Sean O’Casey great play uses a fixed perspective to watch as a range of vivid characters come and go, selfless, funny and despairing in their own ways, while the heroic myth of Ireland is battled over elsewhere.
This epic new production was directed by Howard Davies, Associate Director of the National Theatre, best known for his work there such as Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Crucible, 3 Winters, The Silver Tassie and much more. It was s co-directed by Headlong Theatre’s Artistic Director Jeremy Herrin, known for his success with productions such as People, Places & Things, The Absence of War and This House.
The Plough and the Stars was an epic staging of the classic play, with a star creative team which included design by Vicki Mortimer, lighting by James Farncombe, music by Stephen Warbeck and sound design by Paul Groothuis. The cast starred Justine Mitchell, Stephen Kennedy and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.
