    Lyric Hammersmith

Ibsen’s classic drama of sexual politics, A Doll’s House, is transposed onto colonial India in a new version for the Lyric Hammersmith. Catch this sharp and prescient production from 6 September 2019.

Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House has been reimagined by Tanika Gupta for a sharp new production at the Lyric Hammersmith. Shedding new light on the Norwegian classic with a colonial Indian setting, the show plays from 6 September.

Set in Calcutta in 1879, this new version of A Doll’s House brings a fresh perspective to the enduring themes of gender politics and freedom, as Bengali protagonist Niru enters a mixed-race marriage with English bureaucrat Tom, who admires but exoticizes her. As Niru harbours a long-held secret that threatens the foundations of her seemingly ideal life, playwright Gupta’s British colonial setting gives urgency to a bold female perspective that explores race, ownership and the expectations placed on women.

Anjana Vasan stars as Niru, with previous credits including Summer and Smoke at the Almeida and Duke of York’s, and Rutherford and Son at the National Theatre. Further casting includes Arinder Sadhra, Assad Saman, Colin Tierney, Elliot Cowan and Tripti Tripuraneni.

A Doll’s House at the Lyric Hammersmith is adapted from Ibsen’s text by Tanika Gupta (Shakespeare’s Globe: Lions and Tigers, Birmingham Rep: Anita and Me) and directed by incoming Lyric Hammersmith Artistic Director Rachel Riordan (Royal Court Theatre: Killology). The show also includes design from Lily Arnold and lighting from Kevin Treacy.
