The beloved Christmas film transformed

Rediscover the classic Christmas film It’s a Wonderful Life as it is transformed into a stunning, uplifting stage production by the English National Opera this year.

In the peaceful town of Bedford Falls, it looks like it’ll be a white Christmas. However, banker George Bailey can’t get into the festive spirit, and feels that his life has amounted to nothing. When he is visited by his guardian angel, George is shown that Bedford Falls would, in fact, be a little less wonderful without him.

Frank Capra’s genre-defining 1946 film has become a Christmas classic beloved by millions. Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s It’s a Wonderful Life opera promises to redefine the story of hope and community for a new generation. The show is directed and choreographed by English National Opera newcomer Aletta Collins, and conducted by Nicole Paiement.

The It’s a Wonderful Life London production features a starry cast including Frederick Ballentine (George Bailey), Gweneth Ann Rand (Mother Bailey), Jennifer France (Mary Hatch) and Michael Mayes (Mr. Potter).

Book It’s a Wonderful Life opera tickets and enjoy a Christmas classic reimagined live on stage. This heartwarming production is at the London Coliseum in November and December 2022.

Lovely operatic version of the film, a bit darker than I remember the film being but the angel (Clara) was really appealing and the actor who played George did a brilliant job of portraying his disappointment and disillusionment at how he thought his life had turned out, until Clara showed him otherwise. Our first time at the ENO and really enjoyed it.

If you like Opera you'll like this version but a little hard to identify all of the words. The electronic sign above the stage helped which followed the show and what the actors were singing. If you're not into opera you possibly wouldn't enjoy this version sadly.

Love the story. Hated the music. Simple set and too modern for the time of the story. Clarence the angel has been upgraded to Clara - ENO has gone so woke! Even for a soprano I found her voice stridently shrill and overly screechy and I had to resort to reading the surtitles when she sang.
