Judy!, the brilliant musical biopic telling the tale of the life of legendary film star Judy Garland has come to the Arts Theatre for a limited run. Having began previews at The Arts Theatre in London’s West End on 16th May 2017, Judy! ran until 17th June 2017.

Originally titled Through The Mill, Judy! is the brilliant creation of acclaimed writer/director Ray Rackham, which originally opened to great acclaim during its debut run in 2015 at the Southwark Playhouse.

Judy Garland is one of the most iconic superstars of stage and screen to have ever lived. After beginning by performing in vaudeville with her two sisters as a child, she was signed to MGM and quickly became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, after taking the lead role in The Wizard of Oz. After making two dozen films with MGM, including nine with Mickey Rooney, she went on to make record-breaking concert performances, a highly popular recording career and even having her own successful TV series.

Despite all the success, Judy Garland had a turbulent personal life following reaching the dizzy heights of child stardom and first went to a psychiatrist at eighteen. Plagued by financial instability, a battle with drugs and alcohol, and being married five times, Garland eventually passed away following a drug overdose in her 40s.

This remarkable life provides the basis of Ray Rackham’s ultimately heart-warming story, showing how Judy managed to survive in a man’s world and become a legendary icon to millions of fans of all ages across the world.

Rackham tells the story using three ages of Judy, including her as a young innocent girl filled with hopes and dreams before her life changing first film performance, then her at the height of her career and in the midst of a passionate romance, finishing with her as an older and wiser woman.

Judy! is an insightful show which questions the perception that the star’s life was filled by self-destructions, and instead that it was heart-break that led to her downfall.

The cast features Helen Sheals (Downton Abbey, Last Tango In Halifax) as Judy, Belinda Wollaston (Mamma Mia, Titanic) as Palace Judy and Lucy Penrose as Young Judy.

The unforgettable score, performer by a live band features many classic Garland standards as well as some lesser known songs, including ‘The Trolley Song’, ‘The Man That Got Away’ and ‘Over The Rainbow’.

Judy! is one of the most exciting shows at the Arts Theatre in London’s West End this year, with performances having began on the 16th May 2017 and set to run until 17th June 2017. This is a show not to be missed by fans of the megastar!
