Shaftesbury Theatre

Comedian Justin Lee Collins leads the long-locked aficionados in Chris D'Arienzo’s Rock of Ages, playing at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre. Set in 1987 LA, a small town girl and city boy meet and fall in love. But as hopes and dreams collide, it is called into question what is more important – love or fame? Songs from Journey, Bon Jovi and Twisted Sister feature in this raucous and rockin’ jukebox musical.

Rock of Ages is a jukebox musical that utilises classic rock songs from the 1980s, with an original plot written by Chris D’Arienzo and directed by Kristin Hanggi. ‘I Wanna Rock’, ‘We Built This City’ and ‘Don't Stop Believin'’ are just a small selection of the thirty classic rock songs that pepper what is being called ‘a raucous new addition to the West End theatre’ by the Independent.

Set against the backdrop of LA’s Sunset Strip in the late 1980s, we meet Drew, a young aspiring musician who makes ends meet by working at the Bourbon Club, an establishment known for giving many a rock star their first big break. Drew’s lofty ambitions are shared by small-town girl Sherrie, who has come to LA with the hope of making it big in Hollywood. The pair’s shared dreams are what brings them together, but when rock god Stacee Jaxx arrives on the scene and sweeps Sherrie off her feet, the young lover’s relationship is called into question as love and fame collides.

Rock of Ages began its life playing in clubs and off-Broadway venues, before transferring to Broadway in 2009. The rock musical’s appeal is not limited to the stage, with the 2012 film adaptation seeing stars such as Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin and Catherine Zeta-Jones don their musical theatre hats.

The London production sees TV presenter and comedian Justin Lee Collins take on the role of Dennis Dupree, the aging hippy who owns the Bourbon Club, the bar in which Drew (Oliver Tompsett) and love interest Sherrie (Natalie Andreou) work. Tompsett is best-known for playing Fiyero in the West End production of Wicked. X Factor alumni Shane Ward features as Stacee Jaxx, the debauched rock god who attempts to come between the two young lovers.
