The Pianist of Willesden Lane returned to the St James Theatre in London’s West End, following an acclaimed sell-out run earlier on in 2016. A true story of family, hope and survival told through some of the most beautiful music in the world, The Pianist of Wilesden Lane was an effortlessly moving production.
Following a hugely popular sell-out run earlier on in 2016, The Pianist of Willesden Lane returned to the St James Theatre in London.
The Pianist of Willesden Lane tells the real life story of Lisa Jura, a young Jewish pianist living in Vienna in 1938. She dreams following her passion and playing at the huge Muskiverein concert hall in Vienna, but under the new orders of the Nazi dictatorship, things soon begin to change. As she is broken apart from her family and friends and sent on the Kindertransport to London, her life is changed forever, however her love of the piano will always remain.
The Pianist of Willesden Lane features the music of such greats as Debussy, Bach, Grieg, Beethoven, Chopin and more, performed live on a Steinway concert piano, performed by Mona Golabek, real-life daughter of Lisa Jura who was taught to play piano by her mother.
Mona Golabek is now an American concert pianist who has performed at the Kennedy Centre, the Hollywood Bowl and Royal Festival Hall, conducted by greats such as Andre Previn and Michael Tilson Thomas. She has been nominated for a Grammy award and the subject of various TV and radio documentaries, as well as co-authoring the book The Children of Willesden Lane which has become much-loved throughout America and has been adopted into countless school curriculums.
The Pianist of Willesden Lane was adapted into a stage show in 2012, being produced and directed by Hershey Felder. Felder has previously created and performed George Gershwin Alone which saw great success in both the West End and Broadway. Mona Golabek made her debut in the first performance at the Los Angeles Geffen Playhouse in 2012, and since then the pair have toured the show to various theatre.
Having reached great acclaim at the St James Theatre previously, The Pianist of Willesden Lane returned once more giving London’s West End audience another opportunity to experience this heart-breaking true story performed by a truly great pianist. The play began previews on 7th September 2016 with an official opening night on 13th September, and ran through to 16th October 2016.
