Tony Award-nominated, Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter is widely considered one of Britain’s best young choreographers. He has staged works at The Place, Sadler’s Wells and the Southbank Centre, and has also worked extensively on Broadway and in television. Shechter is also amongst The Stage’s 100 Most Influential People in Theatre.
Clowns has previously been praised for a vibrant score, sharp choreography and a bold look at modern society’s violent tendencies. Shechter created the music himself and aims to make work that appeals to all audiences, not just those who know dance. Aiming to capture the truth of human existence, he frequently stages his works in large spaces to foster a communal experience in his audiences.
With lighting design by Lee Curran and Richard Godin, Clowns/New Creation features an ensemble of talented dancers, including Adam Khazmuradov, Natalia Gabrielczyk, Emma Farnell-Watson, Robinson Cassarino, Neal Maxwell, Riley Wolf, Julietter Valerio and Zunnur Sazali.
Although Shechter is based in the UK, he often tours his work around Europe and beyond. These few performances at the Lyric Hammersmith are a great opportunity to see not only one of his acclaimed recent works, but the premiere of a new one. Clowns/New Creation runs at the Lyric Hammersmith from 8 May to 12 May 2018.
Recommended forThough Hofesh Shechter is well-known within the dance world, his appeal reaches far beyond it. Audiences who know their contemporary dance will no doubt want to see this, but anyone who thinks dance isn’t for them should give Shechter’s work a look.
