Based on Greek mythology transported into a rust belt setting, Hadestown follows young lovers Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and his wife Persephone. Eurydice and Orpheus meet in the blush of spring, but soon fall on hard times in the unforgiving winter. When Eurydice is lured in by the greedy and commanding Hades with an offer too tempting to refuse, her husband must travel to the underworld to get her back. With a folk and blues inspired soundtrack that seeps into your bones, Hadestown is a spellbinding journey that resonates with modern America.
London’s National Theatre cast opens Hadestown in New York. Eva Noblezada plays Eurydice, having been nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in Miss Saigon. Reeve Carney (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) plays Orpheus, with Amber Gray (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) and Patrick Page (Time to Kill) continuing their journey as Persephone and Hades from the initial Off-Broadway engagement.
Hadestown the musical was developed from Anais Mitchell’s concept album with Obie Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812). Mitchell provides the final book, music and lyrics, and the show features choreography by David Neumann. The industrial underworld is brilliantly realized by set designer Rachel Hauck, whose credits include This Wide Night and Tiny Beautiful Things.
Pitting love against fear and inviting audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld, Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre promises to be a new musical obsession. The show began previews on March 22 2019, with an opening night set for April 17.
