Stephen Sondheim’s beloved classic Sunday in the Park with George returns Broadway in a strictly limited run at the Hudson Theatre. Following their acclaimed performances in the concert version at the New York City Center's 2016 Gala, Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford star.

Inspired by the French pointillist painter Georges Seurat's infamous work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, the musical follows George and his immersion in painting his masterpiece. Utterly consumed by his need to "finish the hat," George rejects his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot, not realising that his actions will leave irrevocable marks over the next 100 years. It soon becomes clear that the life of his great-grandson (also named George) - a conflicted contemporary artist working one hundred years later - has been touched by George's actions a century earlier.

Jake Gyllenhaal has made several appearances on stage in New York and London, having made his Broadway debut in 2014 in Nick Payne’s Constellations. He is best known, however, for his on-screen work such as Brokeback Mountain, The Day After Tomorrow, and Donnie Darko.

Annaleigh Ashford is known for her work on Broadway, having played Glinda in Wicked and Margot in Legally Blonde. She also won a Tony Award for her performance in You Can’t Take It With You, and was nominated for another originating the role of Lauren in the Broadway production Kinky Boots.

Sunday in the Park with George is one of composer Stephen Sondheim’s best-loved works. However, he is perhaps best known for musicals such as Gypsy, Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd. This production is directed by Sarna Lapine, niece of Sunday in the Park With George’s book writer James Lapine.

A tale of passion and the consequences of one’s action, Sunday in the Park with George is a spectacle that shouldn’t be missed.
