In Big Cherry the council meeting is in full swing and its members have ambition on their minds. Whether it's money or social status, the representatives of one small town are fighting their way to the top – and in just a matter of minutes, everything can change. Combining local politics and national issues to shocking but brilliant effect, The Minutes is a funny, potent portrayal of democracy.
The Minutes made its world premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in 2017, where playwright Tracy Letts (August: Osage County) received a nomination for that year’s Pulitzer Prize for Drama. On Broadway, Letts also stars in the play, alongside a cast including film and stage star Armie Hammer (Straight White Men) and Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller (Carousel; Waitress).
The play is directed by Steppenwolf Theatre Artistic Director Anna D. Shapiro, who previously helmed the Broadway debut of August: Osage County. Other creatives include set designer David Zinn (Fun Home), lighting designer Brian MacDevitt (The Book of Mormon) and costume designer Ana Kuzmanic.
Showcasing Tracy Letts’ sharp eye for the political and the personal, The Minutes at the Cort Theatre heads up an exciting year of new plays on Broadway. It begins previews on March 1, with opening night on March 15.
