Ntozake Shange’s landmark choreopoem about the power of Black womanhood returns to Broadway in a fearless and visionary new production.

A lyrical celebration of Black sisterhood

Ntozake Shange’s trailblazing, powerful tribute to Black womanhood returns to Broadway for the first time this year, in a new production of the landmark play.

Seven women come together to share their stories, celebrate their strength, and find joy in each other’s triumphs in this genre-transgressing work. Combining poetry, dance, music and song that resonates to the back of the auditorium, this joyful celebration of sisterhood inspired and paved the way for a whole new generation of theatermakers.

Shange’s legacy includes 15 plays, the most famous and acclaimed of which is now reinvented, directed and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown (Once On This Island) for a new Broadway season. The show features a cast of seven: Amara Granderson, Tendayi Kuumba, Kenita R. Miller, Okwui Okpokwasili, Stacey Sargeant, Alexandria Wailes, and D. Woods.

It sparked an entirely new theatrical genre when it premiered, and continues to resonate with audiences today. Book for colored girls tickets and experience the modern classic in a brand new production at the Booth Theatre.
